Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in profile. From the upper part of the weight a small pierced integrally cast lug extends. The pierced hole has been achieved by cutting from each side it has a diameter of 2.3mm. The weight is plain and undecorated. The underside of the weight has an irregular hollow possibly to allow the insertion of wax or resin to either verify the weight or fine tune its accuracy. It is a mid grey colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become asymmetrical. Similar standing weights have been dated to the medieval period (Biggs and Withers Lead Weights 32-33 ref 77-78). It is likely that the weight would have been used as a trade weight to weigh 1 ozs.
The weight measures 15.5mm diameter and is 27.8mm high. It weighs 29.69 grams or 1.01ozs (458.0 grains).
