An incomplete fragment of a cast copper alloy suspension loop from a chafing dish handle, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (1450 - 1600 AD).
The loop is sub rectangular in plan and cross section, with tapering sides and a rounded terminal. At the flat end, there is a cylindrial attachment knop (diameter 7.36mm); the end of this knop is broken, with the surface patina covering the surface indicating damage in antiquity, prior to burial. It has a cast hole located off centre, which is oval in shape (7.63mm by 6.21mm), probably as a result of wear. No decoration appears to be present on either surface.
The loop is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.
It measures 23.64mm in length, 14.70mm wide and 7.80mm thick. It weighs 13.8 grams.
Several similar chafing dish 'lug's or loops have been recorded on the PAS database, often still with the handle attached, including HESH-13ADF7, IOW-CA7641 and WAW-6A19B4. All are Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval in dating (c.1450 to 1600 AD).
