An incomplete cast copper alloy harness pendant of medieval date. The harness pendant is of quatrefoil form and is decorated with a heraldic devise and coloured enamel. The devise is of a central lion rampant azure (blue) within a gold shield shaped border and framed in red. The reverse is undecorated and the suspension loop projecting from the upper edge is broken.
The metal is a mid reddish-brown colour and is worn. The harness pendant is 41mm long, 32.7mm wide, 3.3mm thick and weighs 12.7g.
Harness pendants were common in the 13th and 14th centuries but were not necessarily used directly by the nobles whose arms are depicted. They were also used to mark possessions such as horses, or as badges of allegiance to these nobles.
This particular heraldic devise may be linked to the Percy family, powerful nobles in Yorkshire and Northumberland.
