A complete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of Post Medieval dating (c.1550 - 1650 AD).

The buckle frame is complete and sub oval (vesica) in plan, with a integrally cast central bar. The buckle frame consists of two sub oval double loopes, within an oval frame. The external edge of the frame has been serrated or cusped. Triangular extensions of the frame are present on either side of the double loops and top and bottom of the central bar. Within these extensions, a lozenge shaped perforation or hole is present. This style of frame is commonly referred to as an openwork style. The back of the frame is plain and undecorated.

The pin is still present and attached to the central bar. The pin has been cast as a tapering flat bar, with a central swelling. The rear terminal of the pin has been wrapped around the central bar as the method of securing it.

The buckle is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. The patina has been removed from some points along the edges of the buckle frame and pin, probably because of abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil.

The buckle measures 58.29mm long, 41.08mm wide and 2.49mm thick. It weighs 11.1 grams. The pin measures 25.15mm in length, 4.86mm wide and 2.38mm thick.

Similar double loop oval buckles with openwork frames have been published by Whitehead (2003, p.69, #434) and he has dated them to c. 1550 - c.1650.
