A silver gilt post Medieval dress hook.
Read Class D, Type 6. Trefoil shape in plan.
Each trefoil is decorated identially. The hook and the loop on the back of the plate are still present.
There is a pellet of silver in the middle of the three lobes, in the centre of each lobe, and also at the junction between each of the lobes. Each of the lobes has a border of twisted wire. Around the central pellet of silver are four circles made of twisted wire.
Thickness of body is 5.13mm and thickness including hook is 9.28mm.
Notes:
The filigree decoration is close to that found on dress pins with ball terminals reported through the Treasure Act and suggests that this dress fitting was probably made in a work shop that also produced the pins. A new type of design to be reported through the Treasure Act.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
