Object type certainty: Certain

A corroded and incomplete Medieval copper alloy scabbard chape. The chape is made from a single piece of material that is folded symmetrically along its shorter side. The base of the chape is sub-triangular in plan with long projecting arms on one side that form one side of the chape. The very tops of the arms appear to be missing from old breaks and this may be where rivet holes were originally located. Just in from where the projecting arms meet the top of the base there is a hemisperical cut-out on the edge of both halves of the chape. The base section is decorated on both outwardly facing sides with a series of equally spaced transverse lines. The chape dates from the 13th to 14th century. It measures 44.8mm long, 21.2mm wide narrowing to 11.5mm and weighs 6.70 grams.
