An incomplete cast copper alloy heraldic harness mount, of Medieval dating (14th Century AD).
The harness mount is circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. It consists of a front circular disc, with the front enameled and would originally have had an integrally cast attachment shank, now missing. The enamel decoration on the front consists of a wavy or scalloped border and a red enamelled background. Located centrally on the background is a lion rearing, standing on its rear legs, with a blue diagonal stripe placed across it. This design can be described, using heraldic terminology as Engrailed gules, lion rampart argent surmounted by a bend Azure.
The back is plain and undecorated.
It measures 35.76mm in diameter and is 4.58mm thick. It weighs 22.5 grams.
Heraldic horse furniture of this style was commonly throughout the 14th Century and consisted of harness pendants, hangers and mounts. A similar sized mount, although with a different heraldic device was published by Ashley (2002, p.20, #191). The family to which this heraldic device can be attributed to, has not been identified at this time. Further research is required to identify the original owners of the coat of arms displayed.
