An incomplete silver coin of Early-Mediaval date. The coin is a Dane law imitation of Alfred's two line type, minted at London by the moneyer Tilewine. It would have been struck in the Southern Danelaw, between c.880 and c.895. The inscriptions are : EL [ ]D REX and [ ]ILE:. / [ ]VNE:. The style of the obverse die is pretty good, and close to the original London style, but the reverse is cruder and has errors in the inscription. A comparable Viking coin from the Ashdon (Essex) hoard, no. 28, reads TILE:. / IVNE:., with a similar error in the bottom line. Above identification detail by Mark Blackburn of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
It is not possible to determine the coin's diameter but it was in excess of 18.53mm. Weight of incomplete coin is 0.8g.
