A copper alloy Early Medieval strap end of Thomas's type E, but with decoration that looks to be in Urnes style. The strap end is tongue shaped with a recessed flange across the straight end. This is perforated by three rivet holes (rivets missing) to fix the strap end to the strap. The plate has deeply recessed moulding, but is not openwork. The design is of curving interlace, possibly representing a quadruped, within a border. The metal has a dark patina surviving in the recesses, but is mainly dark brown. The reverse is plain. Type E strap ends date from the late 9th to 11th century.
