Gatcombe, Isle of Wight: silver-gilt finger-ring (PAS: IOW-02C528; Treasure: 2011T272)
Date: c. 1300-c. 1400.
Discovery: Found by Mr Dave White while metal-detecting in April 2011, and reported to Frank Basford (Isle of Wight FLO).
Description: An incomplete silver-gilt finger-ring with a bezel formed of clasped hands. Most of the hoop is missing and the surviving parts, adjacent to the bezel, are triangular in cross-section. The breaks are old.
Discussion:
Dimensions: 17.1mm (length) x 5.4mm (width) x 2.6mm (thickness). Weight: 1.04g.
Metal content: The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1711. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
