COSMETIC MORTAR

Object type certainty: Certain

A copper alloy end looped cosmetic mortar dating from the Late Iron Age or Roman period (100 BC - 400 AD). The main period of use seems to have been in the 1st and 2nd century. The mortar has a wide, down turned and flattened end loop which seems devolved from bird head loops. The end of the mortar siply extends, bends downwards, forms a tear drop shaped loop and runs along the base of the mortar where it is pressed against the body. The opposite end of the mortar is plain, without the knop which is common on bird headed looped mortars. The mortar is U shaped, fairly flat and there is evidence of wear in the base where the patina is smoother and glossier. The object has a rich dark green patina and is in good condition.

Notes:

This find was recovered from an area of crop marks that may represent a ladder settlement.
