An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Hod Hill derivative bow brooch. Only the lower half of the bow, foot and part of the catchplate survive, the remainder of the brooch now missing due to old breaks. The bow is flat, rectangular in form and tapers slightly towards the foot. At the centre of its front face is a central, projecting vertical rib that has transverse notched decoration. At the join of bow and foot there is a transverse moulded rib that projects slightly beyond the edges of the bow. Beneath this extends the foot, which is flat, triangular in form and tapers towards its base. The foot appears undecorated but has a projecting oval shaped terminal knop. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast but incomplete catchplate that is semi-circular in form/profile although missing its outer edge due to old breaks. This brooch fragment measures 32.38mm in length, 5.68mm in width, 2.41mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 1.37g.
This is an incomplete Roman Hod Hill or Hod Hill derivative bow brooch similar to an example published by Hattatt (1989: no. 49). It is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
