SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SOMDOR1573

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with a oval die from which rises the handle in the form of a flattened trefoil on a short, oval sectioned, stem. The upper loop of the trefoil is missing to an old break, the lower side lobes have roughly circular holes through them. The die has an incised design of the letters I C with a branching tree running between them and spreading out above and below them and no outer border. The die is 14.2mm by 13.6mm; the matrix is now 20.6mm tall; it weighs 3.43grams.

Various similar matrices are recording on the database and in Read (2001, 81) with a mix of designs including similar initials e.g. SUR-570184, BH-282B41 and SUR-D1E3C3 (a more elaborate silver version). They are thought to be 17th century in date.
