Late Medieval - Post medieval cast copper alloy thimble with sloping sides, a slightly domed top and a slight carination between side and top. The thimble is squashed and the top is damaged with c.50% missing to an old break. The sides are covered with a continuous spiral of circular pits arranged in neat rows. The spiral appears to continue onto the top with slightly smaller pits but due to damage and corrosion this is unclear. There is a plain band at the rim with a indented line separating it form the main field and the pits. The squashed rim has several tears but no obvious notches and there is probably no bare tonsure although the missing section makes this unclear. The thimble is now 20.9mm tall, 25.9mm by 7.6mm at the base, 0.8mm thick and weighs 5.18 grams.
It is similar to Holmes (1988) p. 1 Fig 2a which is dated 1400-1550 AD and to examples from Southwark (Egan 2005: 131-2, no.629-631) from contexts dated 1530-1600 AD.
