LACE TAG

Unique ID: SWYOR-316C82

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A silver lace tag or aglet probably dating form the Post Medieval period, most likely the 16th or 17th century. The tag is sheet silver in a cone shape, with an edge to edge seam. The closed end is solid and has a slight knop. The open end has a rounded collar below the opening with a band of milling flanking it on each side. There are traces of a white paste or glue in the opening.

There are few similar lace tags on the PAS database. Parallels in copper alloy include BH-F13511, WILT-71AAE6 and SWYOR-178C61. Medieval examples tend to be longer and larger. A gold example but more ornate is LON-F2F3A4 ( 2011 T44).

As the aglet is likely to be greater than 300 years old and is more than 10% silver it fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
