STIRRUP

Unique ID: SWYOR-B30828

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper alloy probable stirrup-strap mount dating from the 11th century. The bottom part of the mount is missing, and it is this end which has the defining features of a stirrup-strap mount, so it's identification is uncertain. It is a triangular object with a worn zoomorphic animal head terminal at the apex. There is a rivet hole beneath this, and then the plate is decorated with niello. The design is unclear; only a pointed oval outline is visible. The break at the bottom is patinated. The reverse is slightly concave but otherwise plain. There is a slight possibility that this is a strap end, similar to the Trewhiddle style ones dating to the 9th century, but it seems too large and thick. If it is a stirrup-strap mount, it probably falls into Williams's Class A, though it is not quite like many of the examples on the database. The closest is perhaps IOW-09B866. The metal has a light green patina which is flaking to reveal purplish metal underneath.
