PAS ID: HESH-9C17D7
Date: Medieval (13th century), with Post-Medieval amendments
Description: Medieval gold finger-ring with blue stone setting. The hoop is D-shaped in section. The hoop widens towards the bezel which has seven cusps and which has been adapted to take a crescent-shaped blue stone.
Analysis: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of a finger ring from Moreton, Herefordshire carried out by the British Museum's Scientific Research Section, indicated a gold content of 85-88%, a silver content of 8-10%, the remainder being copper. The blue stone was identified by Raman spectroscopy as sapphire.
Discussion: The blue stone is not consistent with the Medieval date of the ring and so may be a later replacement.
Dimensions:
Max diameter: 19mm

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
