A lead alloy Post-medieval token, probably dating from the c.17th century and possibly used as agricultural or merchant tallies/tokens or as small change. This token has patterning on both sides - one side appears to have a central pellet with three narrow 'petals' radiating from the annulet's centre, at one side, with the curved lines of just one side of two further petals, and three raised pellets in the gap between the petals. On the reverse is a pattern of concentric circles with faint lines bridging them. No direct comparison could be found in Powell's typology, nor in Fletcher's 2005 book, but similar designs to each side are known. The petals motif fit into Powell's type 1, and the concentric circles into Powell's type 31.
Lead tokens, as well as copper tokens, were very popular during this period and through into the 18th century, but where copper tokens are easily attributed to individual people, trades or places, lead tokens are more enigmatic.
