BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: HAMP-4EF407

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval book-clasp of Howsam type A.5.1. The small artefact is sub-rectangular in shape, with expanded and cusped lateral terminals with narrowed protrusions for the hooks. The curled hook is 5.4mm wide. At the opposite end is cylindrical loop, 6.35mm wide; this retains the corroded remains of an iron axis bar. The artefact has been cut from a flat sheet. The upper surface is decorated within a linear border. Within this is a hexagonal field created by diagonal incisions towards the hooks. The zones outside this field are decorated with diagonal incisions. This field is quite pitted and deliberate detail difficult to pick out. The sides are slightly bevelled. This artefact has been cleaned such that it is a yellow-brown colour.
