696+ BI radiates and pottery fragments to AD 274 BM ref.: 2011 T74
Circumstances of discovery and report on pottery by Frank Basford (FLO: IOW)
A Roman hoard of radiates was discovered within a ceramic vessel in the eroding cliff-face of the south-west coast of the Isle of Wight by Mr Mick Green. The side of the vessel, a New Forest Ware flagon (Fulford Type 1 (1975), was exposed, the colour coating had worn off and Mr Green thought it was bone. On prising it out of the cliff the vessel disintegrated into several pieces and the coins fell out. The majority of the coins were fused together and some became loose. The neck of the vessel was missing and a body sherd from the lower part of a Dorset Black-Burnished ware (BB1) cooking-pot of uncertain type, had been placed over the top to form a lid. The coins were taken home by Mr Green who used tap water to remove soil and then dried out on a table for a few days. Frank Basford (Isle of Wight FLO) was informed and visited the site with Mr Green. The vessel had been situated just beneath the topsoil within Brickearth about 30.0 cm from the surface. The find-spot was photographed and its position recorded using a hand-held GPS device. The vessel appears to have been fractured before it was removed as some of the breaks are old. Four small sherds of Vectis Ware pottery were found in the cliff-face about 30.0cm west of the coins.
First and last coins
Two specimens of Gallienus were noted from the joint reign AD 253-60) from the mints of Gaul (i.e. probably Trier) and Antioch. The latest coins are of the Tetrici, running up to the end of the reign (AD 274); although there are some coins of Aurelian (AD 270-5) present, these are all from Milan in the early part of the reign.
Dispostion
The finder has waived his portion of the reward in order to allow the hoard to be acquired by Brading Roman Villa.
One coin was not represented in the BM collection. This was of Aurelian from the mint of Milan with the type of Concordia seated left and holding two standards (RIC 106)
