A copper alloy possibly Bronze age socketed hammer head. It is in two parts and is incomplete due to old breaks. The main piece has a solid head, 16mm in thickness, and rectangular in shape, surmounted by an integral loop. This has rounded sides and a flattened head and a central, circular perforation. There is a groove outlining a rectangular area surrounding the loop. The sides to front and back of the hammer head are vertical, and there are sloping shoulders leading down to the socketed terminals to left and right. One terminal shows two sides of the socketed area, suggesting an opening of 16.8mm x 11.8mm, the other two sides being missing. There is a narrow rectangular collar surrounding this opening on the two extant sides. The opposite terminal is a separate piece, showing the end of the socket with a square section, c.6.8mm in length. The outer edge of the terminal, the hitting surface, shows signs of wear, but there is much corrosion over the surface.
The width of the hammer head across the socketed areas of both pieces is 52.04mm, and the length is 38.95mm. The width across the head is 18.35mm. The hammer weighs 81.9g.
