Dispersed Late Bronze Age hoard.
1. Socketed Axe. Now badly distorted, originally sub-rectangular or hexagonal in section. Prominent moulding around socket, slight moulding below, loop, casting seem along two sides. Irregular and ancient break shortly after start of expansion for (missing) cutting edge. Length (at least) 65mm, socket (external, distorted) 49 x 27mm (internal, distorted) 39 x 16mm. Weighing 145.4g.
2. Socketed axe fragment. Rectangular section, ancient break across the very end of the socket, slightly expanded for unsharpened, slightly curved cutting edge. Length at least 36mm, width (at cutting edge) 44.5mm, (at break) 37mm. Weighing 79.8g.
3. Tanged and Lugged chisel. Central flat, circular collar to one side of which the awl is circular sectioned, tapering towards a point, the very end of which is now broken / damaged. On the other side of the collar the awl is rectangular sectioned, thinning towards a break, with casting seem on one side and slight traces of file marks on one face. Total length 75mm. Diameter of collar 17mm. Weighing 15.0g.
4. Socketed axe. Fragment of moulding from socket very similar to 1 (although from a different axe as 1 is complete). Length at least 25mm. Weighing 10.9g.
5. Tiny fragment of tip from spear or blade. Flattened oval section, abraded edges, ancient transverse break. Length at least 17mm, width at break 12mm, weighing 1.5g.
6. Fragment of sword from the handle as it starts to expand for the blade. Rectangular section, transverse breaks at either end, raised concave edges. Length at least 11mm, width at least 30mm, thickness 6mm. Weighing 6.4g.
7. Irregular piece of molten copper alloy, probably part of cake ingot. Measuring 56 x 40 x 19mm. Weighing 177.2g.
8. Irregular fragment of copper alloy. Flat sectioned, slightly curved, ancient breaks on all sides. Measuring 18 x 19mm. Weighing 4.2g.
9. Fragment of stone with copper alloy / copper alloy corrosion adhering. Weighing 3.5g. Found near other objects at TF 7806 1627;
Notes:
The socketed axe and sword fragments together with the tanged and lugged chisel are typical of the Late Bronze Age.
The age, material and number of objects of this hoard therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
