A copper-alloy strap-mounted terret of Roman date.
The ring is circular in plan and of flattened-oval section. A rectangular hanger projects outwards at one end. At the opposite end is a baluster-shaped knop which terminates in a sub-circular moulding with segmented upper surface. Decorating the outer surface of the ring is a circumferential groove, over which has been punched a series of closely-spaced triangular marks. A small amount of dark blue enamel survives between the ring and the base of the baluster knop. There is a small amount of wear on the inner surface of the ring. The artefact measures 68.4mm long, 40.5mm wide and 10.6mm thick. The weight is 82.85g.
Plain circular terrets with rectangular frames are relatively common finds, with several examples recorded on the PAS database (e.g. GLO-F9D7D2). Decorated examples are, however, much less common. A similar terret with decorative knop is NMS-DE9874, for which a 1st century date was suggested.
