A cast, copper alloy Roman plate brooch dating from 200-350AD. The brooch is oval in shape. There is a smaller, central oval delineated by a raised ridge; this probably contained an intaglio which is now missing. Between the inner oval and the rim of the brooch there is a further oval ridge which is lower than the central ridge. The brooch carries traces of gilding. Part of the pin mount and part of the catch plate remain on the reverse. The pin mount and the pin are missing. The brooch is 35.3mm long, 28.4mm wide and 10.4mm thick. It weighs 15.61gm. A similar example is illustrated in Hattat, Visual Catalogue, figure 223, number 643.
