A copper-alloy T-shaped brooch of Roman (late 1st to mid 2nd century) date (cf. Hattatt 2000: Figs. 162-163).
The bow is slightly bent and the pin is missing; otherwise, the condition is very good, with little corrosion. The wings consist of a horizontal cylinder with a flattened upper surface. The axis bar is contained within this cylinder, while the missing pin would have been attached via a vertical slit at the centre. Extending upwards from the top of the head is a remnant of the chain loop. The upper portion of the bow has flat surfaces and extends backwards at 90 degrees from the back of the head. Below this, the bow angles steeply downards and is parallel-sided. The upper surface of this portion has a rectangular cell, split into two equal columns by a low ridge. Contained within these cells are the remnants of orange enamel insets. Immediately below the upper bow, roughly halfway down the brooch, is a decorative moulding. The lower bow is longer than the upper, is of triangular section and tapers towards a moulded foot with transverse ridge at the top. On the underside of the lower bow is a complete, unperforated catchplate with a rolled outer side. The underside of the upper bow is slightly concave.
The brooch measures 51.7mm long, 19.7mm wide (head) and weighs 10.07g.
