RING

Unique ID: HAMP-C280F3

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper-alloy ring of probable late Iron Age to Roman date. The ring is semi-circular in cross-section, with a flat internal surface. It is decorated externally with a raised median band. The ring is uneven; it thickens in sections (min 6.5mm, max 7.2mm) and expands in hoop width (min 3.8mm, max 5.7mm). Consequently this gives the impression that the hole is off centre. The apparently deliberate difference between the two sides may suggest this is a harness loop rather than a bead. The variable grey/green patina with slight pitting and the decoration perhaps support a late Iron Age/early Roman date range, although an earlier or later date ought not to be ruled out. For similar examples see Jackson (1990, 156).
