A Medieval silver gilt crucifix which may have been fitted to a larger object such as a book binding, a casket or a shrine. The body of the cross is a hollow tube. The arms are missing, but the junction point show that they too would have been circular sectioned tubes. The upper vertical part of the cross is also missing, broken at the height of Christ's halo. The ends of Christ's arms are also broken and missing. The base of the cross has a flat terminal with a double collar above. The flat face is decorated with an incised cross, an elongated pellet in each angle and a circle of cross hatching in the centre. The figure of Christ is cast solid and remains attached to the cross; it appears to have been soldered at the head and feet. Christ is depicted with His head tilted to His right, a rotund stomach, wearing a loin cloth tied on His right hip, and with crudely depicted legs and feet, crossed at the ankles. There is a radiant halo behind His head, the rays indicated with incised lines.

Another example with this tubular construction, but with a different Christ figure is ESS-05B0E3 (2009 T212). It has been examined by James Robinson of the British Museum and dated to the late fifteenth to early sixteenth century.

Notes:

As the object is more than 300 years old and contains more than 10% silver, it meets the criteria of the 1996 Treasure Act.
