A fragment from a Roman cast copper-alloy spoon dating to the first to fourth century AD. The fragment comprises part of the bowl and the junction between bowl and handle. The bowl is mandolin shaped, making it a Type 3 spoon in Crummy's (1983, 69) classification. Much of the bowl has been lost after a ragged diagonal break. The bowl has flattened edges and a shallow bowl within that flares out before the break. It widens slightly at its junction with the handle (W.: 6.65mm) and ends in a double transverse ridge. Emerging at ninety degrees to the end of the bowl is a curved junction element that thins as it becomes the handle. As the junction element curves up to attain the height of the bowl there is a triangular removal on the upper surface. Beyond the handle, now with a circular cross-section, begins to curve upwards; it has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. The fragment has a dark grey-green colour with some patches of off-white corrosion product.
