A small vessel rim sherd dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. It weighs 16.1g and measures 54.52 x 22.44 x 7.5mm. The sherd comes off the rim of a Roman black-burnished ware storage vessel or urn. These vessels are fairly common in Cumbria and although they where domestic wares, they were also used as urns in cremation cemeteries, e.g. Brougham and Beckfoot. These vessel are usually vase- or jar-shaped with a wide mouth opening and a small, curvy outwards-facing rim. They are mostly made from a dark or lighter grey fabric with a darker grey slip covering the surface. The typical decoration of these vessel is a faint cross-hatching on the shoulder and slightly above it. The fabric is usually quartzite-tempered and has many smaller and medium-size inclusions.
