BROOCH

Unique ID: SWYOR-B8E3A7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy small-long brooch. Only the foot survives. It is triangular with concave sides and a convex base. The break is patinated. The foot is decorated with a border of annulet punches. Above the foot is a panel of two raised transverse ridges, and above that a flat panel decorated with transverse grooves and a similar annulet punch border. Lappets project from the sides of this area, in the form of a downward pointing scroll, like a stylised bird's beak. One is almost complete, but the one on the right is damaged. The catchplate also projects from the back of this area, but is not complete. The brooch has a patchy dark green patina. Compare to Cam-836BE7, SF-A195F3 and NCL-835237. It dates from c. 450 to c. 550 AD.
