Silver broken groat probably of Edward III struck in London during his 4th coinage (pre-treaty series C or D - most probably a D/C mule). The coin is broken rather than being cut - this damage appears to be in antiquity. It is possible that the coin has also been clipped

The initial mark looks like a square or very wide cross, North's cross 1, 1a or pos 3, reversed roman N's lombardic M, E closed, annulet after the M on reverse, Z and probably after X on obverse and the R does look normal, the reversed N's are typical of series C, the normal R's of series D, the N's on the obverse could be unbarred or normal but aren't reversed so a mule seems likely, they are very common in these coins and D/C is a known combination
