A fragment from a cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late Anglo-Saxon date (c. 11th century AD). The shape and style suggest it is a lower corner fragment of a Williams' Class A, Type 8 zoomorphic mount (see Williams 1997, 48; fig. 32). At the corner is a projecting pointed animal head. Along the side of the mount is the moulded body with a limb/wing emerging from it into the body of the mount at an angle. One of the lower rivet holes remains and displays evidence of iron corrosion. Adjacent to is is the probable side of the second rivet hole; a weak point at which, amongst others, the object broke. The profile is curved with a right angle flange at the base. The fragment has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with patches of light-green corrosion product in places. The object is likely to date from the first quarter of the 11th century to the early 12th century (Williams 1997, 8).
