A cast copper-alloy crotal (animal bell) of post-medieval date. This complete example has a square suspension loop with a circular perforation (13.0 by 8.1 by 4.7mm), located between the two circular sound holes of the upper hemisphere. The upper hemisphere is decorated with a sunburst pattern formed of incised lobes. There is a wide median ridge separating the upper and lower hemispheres. The sound slot on the lower hemisphere runs parallel to the suspension loop and terminates in two large circular holes. The lower hemisphere is decorated with a fish scale design and there is no maker's mark. The bell has a dark-grey patina with patches of off-white corrosion product in places. The surface is in a heavily worn condition with parts of the design erased. The 'fish scale' decoration dates this crotal to the 16th or 17th centuries (Bailey 1995, 40-41; ref. 7).
