A cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Class 4, flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.d Pl. 47. The brooch is complete apart from its missing pin and pin mechanism. It has semi-cylindrical wings which are open at the back to contain the pin mechanism. The wings each have pierced circular plates at the end, a characteristic feature of this brooch type. The brooch also has the moulded plates above the wings which are a familiar feature of this type of brooch. The top of the brooch is decorated with two ribs which appear to run down the length of the bow, though wear and corrosion masks most of the decoration. The bottom of the bow is slightly misshapen. No catchplate remains. The brooch has a dark green patina. The brooch measures 51.7 mm long, 20.5 mm wide, 14 mm thick and weighs 12.4 grams. It dates from the late first to second century.
