An impersonal Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is a flat-backed type made from cast copper alloy. In plan the matrix is circular. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The device is a tall bird with a smaller bird, probably representing hawk and a duck. The legend is '* CREDE MICHI' meaning 'Believe In Me'. The reverse of the matrix has a rectangular platform which has a perforated integral lug at one terminal and tapers in depth towards the other terminal. The matrix measures 18.72mm diameter, 7.76mm thick and weighing 4.4g.
The device of a hawk and a duck often appears on impersonal seal matrices in the 14th century (Harvey and McGuinness 1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals British Library and Public Record Office p. 89). The 14th century also saw impersonal seal matrices diminish in size (ibid, p. 88).
