A probable fragment from a projecting dish-support from a post-medieval chafing dish. The fragment is anthropomorphic in shape and style and is decorated on both sides with incised lines forming the hair, facial features and dress of a man. The execution is quite crude, although the design is the same on both sides. The fragment measures 40.1 mm long, 19.2 mm wide, 2.75 mm thick and weighs 9.7 grams.
This support, along with two others, would probably have extended from the chafing dish much like the figure on a prow of a ship. The chafing dish would have been filled with charcoal and other dishes placed over it, resting on the supports, so that food could be kept warm.
