HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: WMID-2EE8B5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy harness pendant of medieval date. The pendant is sub-rectangular in shape, with a suspension loop which is angled at 90 degrees to the face of the pendant. This suspension loop is broken. On one side of the pendant traces of punched decoration are just discernible. This decoration appears to cover the whole of this side of the pendant, and consists of circular punched motifs, possibly floral in design. A crack runs diagonally from the right corner of the pendant into the centre. Traces of gilding also survive in places. The pendant measures 44.08 mm long (including the suspension loop), 38.14 mm wide, 2.84 mm thick and weighs 9.5 grams.

The shape of the pendant, along with the thin metal and the lack of enamel on this example suggests that it belongs to the early type of pendant recognised by Ashley (2002, 5-7). It probably dates from the twelfth to early thirteenth century.

Notes:

A very similar pendant (WMID-2CCD47) was recovered by the same finder in close proximity to this example, and it is possible that they were associated with the same horse.
