A fragment of a ceramic floor from a pottery kiln, probably of Roman date.

The piece is irregular in form and retains none of its original edges. It measures approximately 185mm long, 140mm wide, 45mm thick and weighs 915.1g. Located just off-centre is a vertical, hour-glass shaped perforation. Surrounding this are the remnants of five further perforations. Areas of the original surface remain, set slightly below the level of the top of the perforations. The fabric is reddish-orange and contains small stone and sand inclusions.

In 1973, a Roman pottery kiln was excavated in Bricket Wood, close to where this piece was discovered (Saunders and Havercroft 1977). The excavated kiln did not retain its floor, but three fire bar fragments (two unstratified and one from an adjacent ditch) were recovered (p. 148-149). Parallels for this type of perforated kiln floor are known from Roman Britain, including from the Nene Valley industry, west of Peterborough.
