Medieval gilded cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount, perhaps in the shape of a dragon or wyvern. Probably 12th or 13th century. Ferret-like head with pointed snout and small rounded ears; the body expands to a projection on either side, probably wings, then narrows to the pointed tip of the long tail. There are two circular apertures in the body, probably attachment holes. There are three rectangular depressions on the obverse of the body, one transverse between the 'wings', one along the neck and one along the lower body - these may have been inlaid with something. There is gilding on the upper side of the mount, and also on the underside of the head but not the body, suggesting the head may have projected over something. The gilding on the body survives in lines as well as in sheet. The head is modelled in the round, while the body/tail are flat; the underside of the body is slightly concave, but this could be due to distortion.Length (bent) 64.5mm, approx original length 98mm, max width (across wings) 25.4mm, max thickness (across head) 4.5mm, min thickness 1.7mm, weight 10.67g.
