A cast, copper alloy coin weight, probably Dutch, dating from 1592 AD. The weight is almost square and has a circular design struck on each side. The obverse is a circle with a beaded edge, within which there is a tressure of four arches surrounding a cross potent. There is a a trefoil of three small pellets on each cusp of the tressure and a large pellet in each of the spandrels. The reverse carries a hand between the numerals 9 and 2 and above the letter H F, all within a wreath. The cross potent design suggests that it was intended to weigh a Spanish or Portuguese coin. (See P and B Withers, Lions, Ships and Angels, page 44.) The hand indicates that it was made in Antwerp, the numbers represent the year (1592), and the letters indentify the maker as Hans Foncq. The weight is 17.3mm long, 16.3mm wide and 1.8mm thick. It weighs 2.82gm. Many Dutch coin weights are found in Britain as Antwerp was an important economic hub and home to over 70 weight makers.
