A cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.j. pg. 74, no. 12038, Plate 48. The brooch is damaged, missing the lower part of the bow and the pin, although the sprung pin mechanism remains in the wings. The wings are open and semi-cylindrical, terminating in pierced circular plates, a characteristic feature of this brooch type. A further characteristic feature, moulded side plates on the bow above the wings, is also present. The front of the bow is decorated with a central rib formed by two linear grooves. To either side of this central rib there are eight decorative lateral ribs. The top of the bow terminates in a forward projecting attachment lug for the spring. Corrosion covers part of the spring, but it looks to have originally had at least nine coils. The brooch measures 38.22 mm long, 21.45 mm wide across the wings, and 16.22 mm thick at the head. The bow tapers from 11.51 mm at the top to 4.65 mm at the break. The brooch has a fairly even brown patina. Polden Hill brooches date from the late first to second century AD. Their distribution suggests that they may have been manufactured in the West Midlands.
