A complete Post Medieval gold mourning finger ring, dating to AD 1695.
The finger ring has a D-shaped cross-section. It is inscribed inside in 'R C ob Dec 95'. There possibly should be a date in between the 'ob' and 'Dec' however the ring is very worn inside. Skull inscribed on outer of band.There is a makers mark inscribed inside, however it is very worn and can not be read confidently. The deceased 'R C' died in Dec 1695. This is a typical mourning ring of the late 17th century. A similar example can be seen on the databse LON-82B904 Diameter: 22.13mm; thickness: 1.18 mm; weight: 3.35g.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
