A lead steelyard weight. It is sub-circular in plan with a portion of the edge having two flat, obliquely angled edges. In profile the weight is rectangular with rounded edges. The upper surface has a central irregular indention with iron protruding from either side. This iron would have been originally a loop. The surface has linear grooves across the surface which is probably created through use. The surface of the lead is oxidised with a white/cream coloured surface. It weighs 806g and measures 60.51mm in length, 60.74mm wide and 37.19mm thick. diameter.
The weight is likely to date to the Romano-British period; mid 1st to mid third century. Barford, Blockley and Day (1984 'A Romano-British Steelyard From Marshfield, Avon'.) discuss a steelyard from Marshfield, Avon which includes a similar looking steelyard weight.
