A copper-alloy Colchester (one-piece) brooch of AD c. 25-c. 60 (cf Hattatt 2000: fig. 155, no. 1456).

The head of the brooch is only slightly wider than the bow. The wings have a flat underside, at the centre of which is a projecting remnant of the integrally-cast spring. Above this, bent backwards, is a rearward lug, the base of which does not touch the top of the bow. The bow is wide at the top, the sides converging to a pointed foot, where there is the remnant of a catchplate. The convex upper surface of the bow bears a central column of three parallel grooves with separating ridges.

The brooch has been heavily cleaned. It measures 69.4mm long, 17.6mm wide (head) and weighs 9.29g.

Class: Colchester (one piece)
