A fragment from an unidentified cast copper-alloy artefact of possibly Roman date. What survives is a globular terminal, from which a main plate emerges, expanding away from the terminal to an old, ragged break. This now trapezoidal plate is curved in profile and curves down to the centre/base of the globular terminal. The front-facing part of the terminal has a field defined by a penannular groove and a transverse groove at the level of the base of the plate. The field is decorated with fairly finely engraved cross hatching. The upper surface of the plate features an engraved linear border within which are two triangular fields either side of a central longitudinal ridge. These fields narrow towards the centre of the terminal; one of them contains what appear to be traces of enamel, now yellow/green in colour. The fragment has a fairly even variable mid-brown patina with lighter corrosion particularly affecting the lower surface. The enamelling suggests a Roman date, although the cross-hatching is characteristically medieval. There are no means of attachment apparent on the object; it may have been soldered to something on its lower surface.
