Part of a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel leg. The leg is rectangular in plan and trapizoid in section with a wider front than back and a narrow raised central rib running down the centre of the front. There is an old break at the top with the lower edge is very worn with an old break across one corner. Butler R., Green C. and Payne N. (2009) Cast copper-alloy cooking vessels, The Finds Research Group AD700-1700 Datasheet 41, suggest that this form of leg was in widespread use in the medieval period although early 17th century examples are also known (p.4). This fragment corresponds to the example given as figure 4a on p.6. The fragment weighs 170g and meausres 59.7mm in length, 49.1mm in width and is 16.5mm thick when measured including the raised central rib.
