An cast copper alloy Post Medieval dress fastening. This component of a dress fastening is probably the 'hook' and not the 'eye'. The body of the dress fastening is a moulded circle in plan with two complete perforated lugs on the outer edge, and a trace of a third lug. These are positioned at 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. At the 6 o'clock position there is a trapezoidal protrotrusion which has a broken edge. This was probably the remains of the hook component. The body of the fastening is decorated with a short voided cross (Cross of St George) within concentric rings. The reverse is slightly concave and undecorated. The surface of the dress fastening is abraded and has patches of red copper corrosion. The mount is also bent and cracked along one edge, this may be recent damage.
The dress hook measures 39.89mm long and 28.51mm wide across the body. It weighs 6.2g.
The dress fastening probably dates to the 17th century. See Robinson (1999) for objects decorated with the Commonwealth Arms
