A cast copper-alloy circular seal matrix of medieval date, from circa 1300 to 1400 AD. The seal matrix is 16.6 mm in diameter and 22.05 mm high. The handle is faceted with six faces. There is a mid rib below the suspension loop which is lozenge shaped and pierced.
The device is slightly masked by corrosion but is clearly a rabbit or hare running left (right on an impression). The legend is not clear enough to discern individual letters. Wildlife, particularly squirrels, hares and rabbits appear frequently on matrices of this type; see for example IHS-AAE653 for a rabbit, IHS-AAB2F6 for a hare, and IHS-2554C7, IHS-27D867and IHS-280271 for squirrels.
