SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: SWYOR-B3ACC3

Object type certainty: Certain

A lead alloy cast spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. It is biconvex with a large central aperture. There is an indentation in the side wall of the aperture, now filled with corrosion. Both faces are decorated with a pattern of raised symbols including triangles, T shapes, groups of three pellets, an arrow, and cross pommees. These were possible intended to represent letters, but were perhaps executed by an illiterate craftsman. The whorl has a grey patina. It probably dates from 1066 - 1650, but whorls are difficult to date with any precision as few have been found in dated contexts. There are many similar examples on the PAS database.
