Copper alloy, red enamel

Harness pendant. Cast shield-shaped heraldic harness pendant with integral suspension loop on one side. A red (gules) ragged saltire appears on both sides of the pendant against a ground of uncertain tint, probably yellow (or). Kate Roe kindly notes that the family Arms of Scargill have been identified as possibly associated with this design. The ragged saltire was also the badge of Late Medieval Burgundy, where it would appear on a ground of azure and silver, or blue and white. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400.

Height: 17.0mm, Width: 23mm, Thickness (pendant): 3mm, Weight: 4.28gms.

Class: Heraldic
